Eastbrook Comprehensive puts the Borough’s Schools on the Map

Eastbrook Comprehensive School students Tomas Valatka and Gintaras Kaminskas competed in their first Thameside Kayaking Race, making history as the first school in the Borough to enter such an event.
This race was the boys’ first build up race in preparation for the Devizes to Westminster. The race started at Aldermaston and concluded at Reading Canoe Club. It consisted of Tomas and Gintaras paddling a total of 12 miles with 13 portages. It was a great test of the strength and character as neither had paddled this distance prior to the event. Tomas and Gintaras finished the race in 1 hour 58 minutes, in 4th place out of 17 competitors. They were the first school to finish, ahead of Churchers College and Millfield School.
Throughout the race Tomas and Gintaras were supported by two dedicated members of staff from Eastbrook Comprehensive School Chris Sullivan and Caroline Braine. A big thank you goes to Maria Playle who gave up her time to show them the ropes of how to be an effective support crew.
A special thank you goes to Barking and Dagenham Canoe Club as without their continued support in providing the school with equipment and training the students for such events this would not be possible.
Further success was achieved for the club by Bill Playle and Stelian Naftanaila who also achieved a credible 4th place in their event.
Tomas and Gintaras take part in their second build up race Waterside B on Sunday 26th February 2012.
