On Friday 11th October Eastbrook School’s Year 9 students took part in a ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ event.
The students were joined by facilitators from the charity and spent the day engaging in a range of activities designed to inform and promote thought around the issue.
The visiting team of ex -professional footballers, led by England International Luther Blissett, included Clint Easton, Paul Mortimer, Osei Sankora and Anwar Uddin. They were also joined by Teresa Parish from Dagenham and Redbridge FC who gave every student a complimentary team poster to reinforce the messages of the day - Show Racism the Red Card.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the day. Demi Ritchie of 9D said it was ‘very inspirational’. Antonio Gomes of 9U commented that racism is ‘not only about skin colour but also about culture, religion and nationality’.
Mrs D Mouser, Head of Year 9, summed up the day: ‘Students actively participated in all sessions including fitness testing, discussions and workshops. I was very proud of how they conducted themselves and displayed a mature approach to a sometime difficult topic.
The providers stated that they were equally impressed with the warm welcome provided by the staff and Year 9 students.
