The Deputy Mayor Elect, Councillor Avtar Sandhu MBE was first elected into Dartford Borough Council in 2011 as member for Newtown ward.
Living in East Dartford, Councillor Avtar Sandhu MBE (known as Av) is happily married to Sukh with two children, Jas and Harps.
After leaving school, he took over the family business and has built up two successful businesses locally. He runs and owns a fully licensed function hall known as Amar Hall. His second business, Mobile Bar Hire Ltd, is a leader in providing fully licensed bars nationwide. Both businesses are very successful locally and nationally within the hospitality industry.
Councillor Sandhu was a Director of Dartford Football Club and both of his businesses were involved in fundraising for the Princess Park Stadium.
Councillor Sandhu has undertaken considerable charity fundraising, including raising £16,000 for the Boxing Day Tsunami Disaster Fund in 2006 and fundraising for BBC Children In Need. Av also supported events nationwide, including raising money for Help for Heroes in central London. He is committed to assisting charities and other organisations in ‘making things work’.
Following in the footsteps of his late father, Mr Darshan Sandhu MBE, Councillor Sandhu has always regarded himself as a people's person who listens to people's concerns and then tries to assist and overcome their issues.
Av sits on the boards of Kent Equality Cohesion Council, Kent Peoples Trust and Council for Voluntary Services.
Councillor Sandhu’s greatest achievements include receiving an MBE for services to the community of North West Kent followed by being elected as Kent County Councillor representing Dartford North East in 2009.
What do I look to achieve as Deputy Mayor?
As Deputy Mayor of Dartford, I am looking forward to working alongside the Mayor of Dartford, Cllr. Patsy Thurlow. Under her leadership, I am looking forward to representing the Borough of Dartford where ever required. As part of the role of Deputy Mayor of Dartford, I look forward to attending many events within the Borough, being a peoples person, I’m always keen to build relations and meet new community groups, businesses and organisations who are willing to meet the Mayoral team of Dartford. My ultimate achievment as Deputy Mayor of Dartford would be to reach out to those members of the community who perhaps need greater envolvement in the Borough. Fundraising is the key to my year as Deputy Mayor and so I’m 100% committed to raising as much money as possible for the Mayor of Dartford during her term in office (Renal Unit at Darent Valley Hospital and Waller Park Pavilion, mini bus).
