Today, the Pearly Queen of Old Kent Road and Bow Bells, Doreen Golding, showed her support for Sport Relief as she launched the official Sport Relief Socks outside Whitechapel’s Sainsbury’s store. The Pearly Queen, who has held her title for just under twenty years, flashed a hint of red as she posed in her regal attire with the Sport Relief Socks.
Doreen Golding said: “The Pearly Kings and Queens have a tradition of raising money for various charities and I am very proud to be supporting Sport Relief this year. With the money Londoners raise we can help to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable people living right here in the capital, around the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.”
The Socks (adults £2.50 and kids £2) are available to buy from Sainsbury’s stores across all of London from Wednesday 15th February. To celebrate the nation’s biggest ever year of sport, the socks have a special Union Jack design and are made from Fairtrade cotton. Sainsbury’s is hoping to raise over £5 million for Sport Relief this year, with all its profits from the merchandise range going towards this target.
This year, over one million people are expected to pull up their Sport Relief Socks and take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile to raise vital funds for vulnerable people across the UK and the world’s poorest countries. The London Mile will be taking place down London’s most famous road, the Mall. Enter right now at www.sportrelief.com.
