Eastern Avenue 1 – West Ham United 0
A competitive and compelling encounter, played at high tempo from the first whistle, saw both teams pushing hard for the advantage in the opening twenty minutes.
The Hammers had marginally the better start but were unable to get in behind the hard working and committed Herons’ defence.
The hosts survived an early scare and began to look more dangerous as the midfield started to move the ball with purpose and conviction.
Goalless at half time was a fair reflection of a match in which quality and endeavour in defence and midfield had restricted the chances.
The second period started much as the first had finished, both teams playing well, but cancelling each other out in the final third.
West Ham looked comfortable sweeping the danger from deep, and Eastern Avenue had too much pace and determination at the back.
As the game ebbed and flowed, it was the Herons who moved into the ascendency. Pushing on, the hosts worked the ball well as the visitors found themselves increasingly pegged back.
Ashleigh Lewis-Shodeinde broke the deadlock, lifting the ball delicately over the West Ham keeper and into the far corner from a tight angle having been played in by Molly Rose.
Eastern Avenue then produced the best spell of the match, containing West Ham and looking the more likely to score.
A frantic final five minutes saw the visitors throw everything forward to try and salvage a point but the Herons held firm to keep a clean sheet and their 100% league record.
