I, Arathi Menon, recently competed in a beauty pageant, winning the title ‘Face of London.’ By winning 1st place in the London heats, I also secured a place as a finalist for the grand final of the competition – ‘Face of Europe’ – which will be held in Disneyland Paris in November this year. The beauty pageant Face of Europe is carried out in support of 2 charities: Headway East Kent and The Rainbow Child Foundation. I would love to raise the profile of Face of Europe, and in doing so, raise awareness about these two charities, and I hope you will support me in doing this by writing and publishing an article about my achievement.
I am 19 years old, live in Brentwood, and am a 2nd year Medical student at Imperial College London. Face of Europe is the first beauty pageant I have ever entered, so I was thrilled and very surprised when I won 1st place in the London heats. I am only 5 feet tall, so I never thought that I had what it took to win a pageant, but Face of Europe is very different from many other pageants as there is no height restriction, and the judges really do look for the whole package, so my mum convinced me that I should apply and try it out.
My hobbies include dancing and drama, and these have helped me from a young age to build on my confidence and enhance my communication skills; I am sure this all helped me in doing so well in the pageant. I have learnt a number of dance styles including Bollywood, Bhangra, ballet, contemporary, and a south Indian dance style called Bharathanatyam. I love acting and have completed LAMDA Solo Acting exams with Distinction up to Gold Medal and have also acted on television on programs such as Crimewatch, The Bill and the brand-new spy drama on BBC1 and HBO ‘Hunted.’ I have modelled when I was younger in pre-teen magazines such as Girl Talk and Go Girl, but entering a beauty pageant was an idea that had never occurred to me. However I am so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and entered Face of Europe, as it has been a really character building experience and I have made so many lovely friends. The experience has made me realise there is so much more to beauty pageants than most people think, and I cannot wait to go to Disneyland to compete in the Grand Finals.
